Becoming a parent brings many changes to anyone’s life. To add to the changes, balancing new or forthcoming parenthood with mental health conditions might feel difficult. In this episode, guest host Barb Solish, NAMI’s National Director of Innovation, is joined by Kate Kennedy-Lynch, NAMI Director of External Relations, and Alessandra Torresani, actress, podcast host, and NAMI Ambassador. They discuss their own lived experiences navigating mental health conditions before, during, and after their pregnancies, sharing what they’ve learned throughout their mental health journeys. Finally, they share ways they’ve found to balance mental health and parenthood for Mental Health Awareness Month and Maternal Mental Health Month.

Kate Kennedy-Lynch spent the first decade of her career in event production in New York City. On the heels of her own experience with a serious postpartum mental health condition after the birth of her first child, Kate pivoted her focus to supporting the mental health movement. She has been with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for nearly four years, where she oversees corporate and foundation partnerships. Along with the cultivation of strategic partnerships and awareness efforts across multiple industries, Kate is passionate about building relationships that support NAMI’s mission to serve those living with mental illness and their families. She is proud of NAMI’s breadth and legacy of work and is always happy to share her story in the hopes that even one person will feel less alone on their mental health journey. Kate holds an undergraduate degree in History from the University of Maryland and is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

Alessandra Torresani

Alessandra Torresani

Alessandra is multi-hyphenate actress, host, creator, and mental health spokesperson. She is dedicated to de-stigmatizing mental health by spreading kindness, compassion, and hope. She brings tons of fun and laughter to her mission with sharing her story about living with BiPolar 1 Disorder on her podcast “EmotionAL Support with Alessandra Torresani.”

Barb Solish

Barb Solish

Barb Solish is NAMI’s National Director of Innovation. She is passionate about mental health awareness, education, and advocacy, especially after the loss of a friend to suicide. Barb’s lived experience developing a mental health condition as a young person also motivates her work improving outcomes for young people with mental health concerns.

In her time at NAMI, Barb has led NAMI’s Youth and Young Adult Initiatives team, developing new resources for kids, teens, young adults, educators, and caregivers. She also led the creation of new initiatives, including the virtual version of the NAMI Ending the Silence presentation program for middle and high school students and NAMI Next Gen, NAMI’s young adult advisory group. In addition to youth and young adult work, Barb oversees NAMI’s Workplace Mental Health Initiatives, including NAMI StigmaFree Workplace. Barb believes strongly that not only is creating a mentally healthy workplace the right thing to do, it’s an economic imperative.
