2025 Federal Government Shutdown

As of 12 AM ET on October 1, 2025, the federal government has shut down due to lack of an agreement for funding for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026.

Some federal services and functions will continue to operate, while others will operate in the short term until their funding runs out and others stopped operating immediately.

Unfortunately, government shutdowns don’t follow an exact script and there are many unknowns — including how long existing funding will last.

NAMI’s Federal Shutdown Guide outlines what we know about operations for federal health care and social services that people with mental illness rely on. This guide will be updated as new or additional information becomes available or a deal is reached to re-open the federal government.
