As the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, NAMI works at national, state and local levels to raise awareness and provide support and education to people affected by mental health conditions everywhere.

We have more than 650 local affiliates and 49 state organizations working in communities across the country, led primarily by volunteers who give their passion, hard work and time to lay the foundation for this vital movement.

Millions of people in the U.S. are affected by mental illness each year. These numbers are powerful tools for raising public awareness, stigma-busting and advocating for better health care.

• 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience a mental illness each year.
• 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
• Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14.

But we know that mental health affects everyone.

The Impact of Mental Health

Mental health is the foundation of wellbeing – and we believe every human being is deserving of wellness. When mental health is neglected, the consequences can be profound on a person’s quality of life, as well as impacting their relationships, families and communities.

Factoids:

• People with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases than the general population.
• 33.5% of U.S. adults with mental illness also experienced a substance use disorder in 2021.
• The rate of unemployment is higher among U.S. adults who have mental illness (7.4%) compared to those who do not (4.6%).
• High school students with significant symptoms of depression are more than twice as likely to drop out compared to their peers.
• Students aged 6-17 with mental, emotional or behavioral concerns are 3x more likely to repeat a grade.
• Among people in the U.S. under age 18, depressive disorders are the most common cause of hospitalization (after excluding hospitalization relating to pregnancy and birth).
• At least 8.4 million people in the U.S. provide care to an adult with a mental or emotional health issue, spending an average of 32 hours per week providing unpaid care.

Breaking the Stigma

Stigma and discrimination remain significant barriers to seeking help and support for mental health issues.

We believe that it’s our collective responsibility to challenge these stigmas, promote understanding and create a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Factoid:

• 47% of U.S. adults with mental illness received treatment in 2021. The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years.
