NAMI is the foundation for hundreds of NAMI State Organizations, NAMI Affiliates and volunteer leaders who work in local communities across the country to raise awareness and provide essential and free education, advocacy and support group programs.
NAMI is a 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization governed by a board of directors elected by the membership. Five NAMI members nominated by Affiliates and State Organizations are elected to the NAMI Board of Directors each year. Additionally, members can submit bylaws amendments and resolutions to be considered each year during the elections at the annual Convention. NAMI has four councils that advise the NAMI Board of Directors:
- The NAMI National Consumer Council is made up of individuals that live with mental illness and who are elected by NAMI State Organizations. There is 1 representative and 1 alternate for every state.
- The Executive Directors Council is made up of current executive directors of all NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates.
- The NAMI National Veterans and Military Council is made up of NAMI members who are active duty military or veterans—or the family members of—with lived experience.
- The State Presidents Council is made up of the current presidents of NAMI State Organizations.
