NAMI is the foundation for hundreds of NAMI State Organizations, NAMI Affiliates and volunteer leaders who work in local communities to raise awareness and provide essential and free education, advocacy and support group programs.
NAMI is a 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization governed by a board of directors elected by the membership. Learn more about our structure, vision and performance at the following pages:
Board of Directors
NAMI’s board is governed by national bylaws and operating policies and procedures. In addition, NAMI’s 2015-2019 strategic plan helps to shape goals, priorities and activities.

Voting and Elections
Five NAMI members nominated by NAMI Affiliates and NAMI State Organizations are elected to the board each year. NAMI members may submit bylaws, amendments and resolutions to be considered during annual elections that take place at the NAMI National Convention. NAMI’s work is informed by people living with a mental health condition or their loved ones. Four councils advise the board:
- Peer Leadership Council: Individuals who live with mental illness and who are elected by NAMI State Organizations. Every state has one representative and one alternate.
- Executive Directors Council: Current executive directors of all NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates.
- NAMI Service Members, Veterans and Families Council: NAMI members who are active-duty military or veterans with lived experience or their family members.
- State Presidents Council: Current presidents of NAMI State Organizations.
